Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is an exercise and education program designed to help you recover from a heart related event or surgery.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is recommended to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle and reduce your risk for further heart events.

Before commencing the program you will have an individual assessment with a cardiac nurse and physiotherapist.

 

Who is eligible?

If you have had any of the following:

  • Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)
  • Unstable Angina with significant coronary artery disease
  • Heart Surgery (bypass, valve surgery)
  • Chest surgery that involves sternotomy (cutting the breastbone)
  • Stent/balloon (PCI)
  • Heart Failure
  • Heart Transplant
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Defibrillator Insertion (ICD)
  • Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac rehabilitation may also be offered for other cardiac conditions after discussion with a coordinator.

It is recommended that people who have a history of coronary artery disease have glyceryl trinitrate medication (Anginine) tablet or spray available to place/spray under the tongue in case of angina, unless contraindicated.

If your symptoms go away you can resume your activities gently.

IMPORTANT - if your angina becomes more frequent, severe, lasts longer or happens when you are doing very little or resting, see your doctor in the next 24 hours.
