Overview of services

The services we offer are specific to the unique health care needs of women. The way we provide services reflects our values of partnership, respect, choice and compassion.

RHW is a tertiary level teaching hospital affiliated with UNSW and Sydney University providing maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services with a Statewide Services role delineation of Level 6 (top level for dealing with acute and complex issues in patient care).

    • Telephone and face-to-face clinical and teratogen information and counselling service (“Mothersafe”)

  • Provision of maternal and newborn services for ‘low-risk’ mothers and babies residing within the local South Eastern Sydney area and for women with gynaecological disorders.
  • Provision of education for undergraduate and postgraduate students of medicine and nursing/midwifery, and specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • Conduct of research related to women’s health and its disorders and in maternal and newborn health.

Gynaecological Oncology: excels in caring for women with gynaecological pre-cancer and cancer. The team provides comprehensive diagnostic assessment, treatment and support for women with these conditions and is one of the State-wide designated units in NSW.

As a major referral centre the staff cares for women from throughout NSW and has pioneered new treatments for ovarian, cervical, endometrial and vulvar cancer.

Gynaecology: range of services including menopause therapy, family planning, endogynaecology, reproductive medicine and endocrinology and paediatric and adolescent gynaecology. Each of these services is headed by highly regarded experts who lead the way in terms of research, teaching and clinical excellence.

Newborn Care Centre (NCC) includes Neonatal Intensive Care which is part of the NSW State-wide Perinatal Services Network. The specialises staff provide support for mothers who are at a higher risk of premature birth or whose baby may have birth defects or suffer complications, offers a chemical use in pregnancy service for mothers and babies with drug dependencies and a development clinic which continues to monitor the child’s development until eight years of age.

Breast Centre: provide diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions. The Centre provides diagnostic radiology services and a breast assessment clinic. Needle biopsies and pre-operative localisation procedures are commonly performed.

Maternity Services: incorporated within this division is antenatal and acute care, midwifery group practice, delivery and postnatal care and an Aboriginal maternal and infant health service. In addition there is the State-wide drugs in pregnancy telephone advice and counselling service, known as Mothersafe.

Maternal Fetal Medicine is a designated State-wide unit of NSW and the Fetal Therapy Centre which is recognised by NSW Health as a State-wide centre.
