​ "Patient Safety is Everyone's Business" 

In partnership with the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), The Safety and Quality Essentials Pathway offers learning opportunities for all SESLHD staff to enhance their skills and knowledge of patient safety and quality improvement through a progressive three-level learning pathway. Aimed at meeting the learning needs of individuals, the pathway offers a step-wise approach to continuously build on new and existing knowledge.

By enhancing knowledge and expertise of patient safety and quality improvement across our organisation, we can continue to achieve our mission of providing safe, reliable and quality patient care in every aspect of care delivery. 

Using a hybrid approach to delivery, SESLHD staff learners can complete the foundational and intermediate levels of the pathway flexibly and virtually through My Health Learning.Image removed.

The Applied Safety and Quality in Healthcare (Adept Level) is a 12 month immersive program that supports and guides participants to lead a quality improvement project that focuses on patient safety aspects of care delivery. The program consists of eight (8) face to face lab days delivered intermittently over 12 months, that facilitate the learning of key skills and knowledge to be an effective leader in patient safety initiatives in our district.       

Excitingly, successful completion of the Adept level program comes with post graduate level credit points of recognition from several universities across NSW at no cost to you. This is a fantastic opportunity to begin your post graduate education journey.

The ultimate aim of the program is to increase your capability to influence the safety and quality of the care and/or service provided by your service. You will be guided by a team of expert facilitators and subject matter experts to apply your learning on the program in your workplaces between labs (workshops) and ongoing, after the program. The application of the learning will increase awareness, new thinking and new daily habits for safety and quality.    

Workshops will be held in August 2025, October 2025, February 2026 and June 2026 in venues across SESLHD, with participants graduating in August 2026.

  • Leadership for healthcare clinical quality and safety

  • Facilitation of psychologically safe and effective cultures in a range of team contexts.

  • Stakeholder engagement e.g. sponsors, consumers, clinicians and non-clinical staff.

  • Quality improvement methods, tools and processes.

  • A range of data sources and tools available to measure and understand local processes.

  • Systems thinking and high reliability healthcare.

  • Human factors and human centred design.

  • Enablers of effective team culture.

Successful Completion of the Applied Safety and Quality Program requires

1. Prior to commencing the program, all participants are required to complete the Foundations and Intermediate Learning Pathways (My Health Learning (MHL) or face to face equivalents):
* Foundations Pathway MHL Code: 335318052
* Intermediate Pathway MHL Codes: 378591148 & 382398949 

2. Attendance to at least 80% of labs and active learning groups 
*Workshops can only be missed under exceptional circumstances  
*you will not be able to take extended planned leave across the program to enable you to lead a project, attend the workshops 

3. Submission of a Portfolio of Evidence
*portfolio activities as evidence of your application of learning in the workplace

4. A1 project poster at graduation (template will be provided) 

5. Facilitate and Lead
*a safety improvement project with your improvement team using a Improvement Science methodology  

6.Present
*15 minute presentation of your learning at graduation ( template slides provided )

You must also be endorsed by both your line manager and service manager/director to participate in the program.
