Early Literacy

Literacy in the early years is a key factor for improved health during the life-course. Reading with children aged 0 to 5 years is the most important activity parents can undertake to enhance their child’s future ability to read and write. To address the importance of children's literacy development, we have partnered with local Non-Government Organisations (NGO) to deliver a number of programs.

The Let’s Read program is an evidence-based program developed by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the Smith Family to improve outcomes in early literacy.

Parents and caregivers of children aged 0-5 years who were part of the program received a free age-appropriate storybook and tip sheets on how to best read to their children and engage with them in literacy promoting activities in their daily life.

Reading to Teddy project is an innovative project delivered by 3Bridges Early Years Support Service volunteers.

The project was founded on research from Scotland about parenting interventions that found time spent reading with a child not only strengthens and reinforces the child’s language and literacy skills, but creates a special time for parent and child bonding and attachment.

The Early Years Support Service volunteers incorporate Reading to Teddy messages into their regular support visits to vulnerable families.
