First sod turned on Sutherland Hospital’s operating theatres complex
Work has officially started on the new operating theatres complex at Sutherland Hospital and the commencement was celebrated in style with NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard and local MPs joining Sutherland Hospital staff and the Redevelopment Team to turn the first sod.
Minister Hazzard also announced Hindmarsh Construction will undertake the main works phase of the $88.5 million redevelopment project, with construction commencing on 11 November 2021.
The event was attended by Tobi Wilson, SESLHD Chief Executive, Joanne Newbury, Acting General Manager, Sutherland Hospital and Leisa Rathborne, Executive Director Northern Region, Health Infrastructure.
Representatives from key Sutherland Hospital services: Jan Heiler, Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services; Dr Huong Van Nguyen, Director of Medical Services; Dr Philip Conroy, Clinical Council Chair; Dr Phil Malouf, Head of Surgery/Medical Co-Director; Dr Leonard Kalish, Head of Anaesthetics and Lisa Hutton, Co-Director Nursing and Operations, also joined the event to witness this important milestone for the hospital.
“Today marks a new chapter for Sutherland Hospital, which has been looking after the health and wellbeing of the Sutherland Shire community for more than 63 years,” Ms Newbury said.
“This project will provide enhanced health facilities ensuring the community has a first-class hospital to cater for the growing population.”
The new building will provide more operating and procedures rooms, surgical short stay and recovery spaces, more staff amenities, a Central Sterilising Services Department, and a new MRI suite.
Sutherland Hospital staff made significant contributions to the planning process, attending more than 50 consultation sessions with the project team before they finalised the design of the building.
The MRI facility is scheduled to open to patients in 2023, and construction on the operating theatre complex is planned for completion in 2024.
