International recognition for St George Hospital ICU project team an Australian first

The project team for the new St George Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) received an honourable mention at the 2019 ICU Design Citation Awards held on 18 February, 2019 in San Diego, California, USA.

This is the first time the accolade has been awarded to an Australian ICU, which recognises designs that best blend the functional requirements of the ICU with the need to offer humanitarian care to patients and carers.

Associate Professor Theresa Jacques, Director, Intensive Care Unit, St George Hospital, was the clinical project lead.

“This international recognition reflects the dedication of everyone involved in designing our ICU, including clinical staff and management at the hospital, Health Infrastructure, architects [Jacobs Engineering Group] and project management [Johnstaff].

“Together we were committed to achieving our vision of a healing environment filled with natural light and Australian colours that houses the latest technology for the critically ill, as well as their families. It’s a fantastic acknowledgement,” Professor Jacques said.

Entries to the award were judged based on the following criteria:

• Commitment to promote a healing environment
• Safety, security and efficiency of the unit
• Innovative, unique, aesthetic and creative design features

Also assessed was the patient bedside area, overall unit design, integration of technology, staff/support areas and family/waiting areas.

The announcement was made at the Annual Congress for the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
