SESLHD’s sustainable transformation

Across the District, we are on a mission to make our facilities more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint.

The Langton Centre has recently welcomed a new electric vehicle (EV) to its fleet, charging infrastructure and a newly-installed solar panel system.

Thanks to the efforts and advocacy of the SESLHD Fleet team, specialised grant funding was able to be sourced to facilitate the installation of leading-edge electric vehicle EV charging infrastructure. Combined with the new solar panel system, The Langton is a prime example of an environmentally sustainable and resilient healthcare facility.

The 20kW solar panels are saving hundreds in energy bills and 600kg in carbon equivalent emissions every week. The Langton is also the first SESLHD site to have EV charging installed as part of SESLHD Future EV Strategy 2030 – powering an EV fleet which supports the clinical outreach team.

Starting on a small scale has the benefit of limiting risks and provides the chance to learn about potential barriers and opportunities, so the Langton team and SESLHD Corporate Services collaborated to deliver a sustainable transformation to the Langton Centre.

Sharon Carey, General Manager of SESLHD Corporate Services, praised the program: “Installing on a small scale and collaborating with staff on our sites is critical as we embark on the challenge of transforming our services.”

“The Engineering, Fleet and Langton clinical teams should be congratulated for helping us take these first steps which will inform the wider rollout of both solar and charging infrastructure as we start to green our passenger fleet.”

The team at the Langton have embraced the greening of their site and their new EV –  an MG4 that has a range of 480kms – and are enjoying the convenience of not having to fill up at the service station every week.

Creating environmentally sustainable facilities can be challenging within NSW Health’s energy intensive sites. For that reason, SESLHD’s Environmental Sustainability Plan 23-25 is focused on creating resilient facilities and moving away from polluting energy infrastructure.
