St George Hospital - celebrating 130 years of care

This year marks a momentous milestone in the history of St George Hospital, caring for the local community and patients in Southeastern Sydney since 1894.

On Saturday 16 November, St George Hospital marked 130 years of operation. This is an incredibly proud moment for the district and everyone who has been, and continues to be, part of the hospital’s journey in delivering world class care to the local community and beyond.

Core to the hospital’s mission is its motto ‘Tu souffres cela suffit’, meaning ‘You are suffering, that is enough’, words of the French microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).

From its early beginnings opening as a ‘Cottage Hospital’ in November 1894, St George has evolved into a comprehensive tertiary teaching facility, offering the highest level of care to the most vulnerable in our community.  The Stage 3 redevelopment, due for completion at the end of 2026, will position the hospital to continue this journey.

“Our evolution from the small cottage hospital to an A1 trauma service with state-of-the-art facilities continues.  I proudly witness the daily embodiment of our ethos, marked by humility and service to the community,” said Angela Karooz, General Manager of St George Hospital.

Celebrations kicked off for the hospital’s 130th year with the annual Ball and Staff Excellence Awards on 15 November and a staff BBQ on 19 November.

At the ball, staff came together to celebrate the end of another great year for the hospital and reflect on the last 130 years. To mark this milestone, ushers dressed in uniforms from the hospital’s past, and people were also encouraged to wear red and white at the staff BBQ.

“As I reflect on this achievement of 130 years, I am so proud of the evolution of our services, how we partner with our community and our continuing commitment to excellence,” said Ms Karooz.

“Our future is bright, with the Stage 3 redevelopment due for completion at the end of 2026 – these amazing new facilities will support us to continue to provide exceptional, person-centred models of care that are at pace with the future of healthcare innovation.

“Most importantly, I am proud of our people who stand at the heart of what we do; a diligent community of clinicians, nurses, allied health staff, administration and support staff who make a daily commitment to improving the lives of our patients. I call out your exceptional impact and celebrate your commitment, especially those who have offered many years of extraordinary service.”
