Supporting new mothers every step of the way

Across our District, our midwifery and maternity staff ensure new mothers are equipped and empowered to take on their most important role yet.

In addition, specialist breastfeeding clinicians provide specialised support to breastfeeding mothers, and build midwives and clinicians with the skills to support them.

Katy Hunt, from the Lactation Service at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW), says it’s important for healthcare providers, policymakers, workplaces and the community to support a woman’s right to breastfeed.

“Following World Breastfeeding Week at the beginning of August, it’s more important than ever that new mothers are supported and empowered throughout their breastfeeding journey.”

“SESLHD provides fantastic support to breastfeeding mothers. This is reflected in our Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation.”

Every year, the SESLHD Lactation Group hosts over 20 workshops, conferences and webinars to NSW and SESLHD midwives and clinicians. On 19 and 20 September, St George Hospital will host a breastfeeding conference that is attended by midwives from SESLHD and around Australia.

SESLHD is home to several breastfeeding services, from Possum Cottage at Sutherland Hospital to the BLISS clinic at St George Hospital. The RHW provides antenatal and postnatal breastfeeding classes, antenatal breastfeeding clinics and the Breastfeeding Support Unit, which accepts inpatient and outpatient referrals. Child, Youth and Family Services also offers the Child & Family Health Nursing service
