Sutherland Hospital Community Open Day hailed a success

Hundreds of community members attended the Sutherland Hospital Open Day recently.

The sunny day and strong entertainment line-up drew mostly local families to the event, which opened with a performance from the Caringbah High String Ensemble. Popular attractions included the children’s jumping castle and face-painting, as well as an activity by the Rural Fire Service where participants used a hose with active water to knock over witches hats. 

 

Cronulla Sharks players Matt Prior and Aaron Gray posed for photos and tossed a ball with visitors. 

 

Attendees included Mark Speakman MP, Member for Cronulla and NSW Attorney-General, and Eleni Petinos MP, Member for Miranda. 

 

Valerie Jovanovic, General Manager, Sutherland Hospital said a short speech to welcome guests.

“The Sutherland Hospital Open Day was an opportunity to celebrate with our community the hospital’s 60th anniversary,” Ms Javanovic said. 

 

“Sutherland Hospital is a community based hospital in the true sense, with local support dating back to 1944 – 14 years before the hospital was officially opened – when the first auxiliary was set up to raise funds towards the building of a new hospital.

 

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the Sutherland Hospital staff and volunteers who helped prepare for the event, and attended on the day to ensure it was a success,” Ms Jovanovic said. 

 

At the end of the official proceedings, Dr Matthew Hall, Head of Gastroenterology Department, Sutherland Hospital, lead the MPs on a tour of the operating theatres to showcase new equipment including gastroscopes and drying equipment.
