Program objectives

To provide a safe and supportive environment where the new graduate nurse will be encouraged to further develop their skills, critical thinking, reflective abilities and clinical judgement.

To rotate participants through two clinical settings so the new graduate nurse can develop comprehensive physical assessment skills and clinical reasoning.

To provide a formal education schedule that supports the new graduate throughout the program.

To deliver a preceptorship model that supports the new graduate nurse during the program.

Applications
NSW Health’s Nursing and Midwifery Office coordinates GradStart which is the state-wide process to recruit graduate nursing and midwifery positions for NSW Local Health Districts and Specialty Networks (LHD/SN). GradStart offers employment to support graduates in nursing and midwifery transition to practice, (NSW, 2020).

Life after GradStart
There are a number of career pathways you can pursue following the GradStart year. The Transition Coordinators will work with all GradStart Nurses to create an individual pathway and support you in your nursing career. Some of the options available are a transition to ICU program, transition to ED program and Clinical Stream program.
