Sonographers who are caring, compassionate and highly specialised health professionals dedicated to obstetric, gynaecological and neonatal imaging. They work closely with doctors and are responsible for analysing anatomical structures during the ultrasound examination to obtain detailed diagnostic images for reporting.
Sonologists, Radiologists and Obstetrician/Gynaecologists who will look at the images produced to diagnose and produce a report for your requesting practitioner. They also perform a range of ultrasound guided procedures.
To make an ultrasound appointment, we need a copy your referral. These can be faxed to (02) 9382 6706, emailed to seslhd-rhwus@health.nsw.gov.au or delivered in person.
All patients seen in the ultrasound department must be patients of a clinic of The Royal and be referred by a doctor at The Royal. GP referrals may be accepted, however, not guaranteed due to high acuity of clinic, emergency and inpatient work.
Once a referral is received, it will be prioritised based on clinical urgency by one of our sonographers or admin staff and an appointment will be scheduled. Please ensure your mobile phone number is provided as an SMS will be sent to you when appointment is made and a reminder sent 3 days prior to your appointment. Please confirm if you plan on attending appointment or call us if you need to cancel or reschedule.
Waiting times and appointment allocation depend on what type of scan or procedure you are having and why. Some scans need to be booked at a specific time in your pregnancy or menstrual cycle. Our team will prioritise each request based on clinical urgency.
We are a teaching hospital and you may be asked to be involved in research, or for a student to be present at your appointment. You have the right to decline. If you do so, this will not impact in any way on the services we will provide.
This service is covered by Medicare. If you are not eligible for Medicare, or Reciprocal Agreement, you will be charged an upfront amount. Details will be discussed with you prior to your scan.
The turnaround for reports completed by our specialist doctors, occur within 24 hours during the week and these will automatically be sent electronically to your referring doctor.
